Abalonyx new member in West Sweden Chemicals- and Materials cluster
Abalonyx is today positioned in the Graphene-Based Materials (GBM) market as the only company in Europe that is able to produce large quantities of graphene oxide. They are now a part of West Sweden Chemicals- and Materials cluster. We've took a chat with one of the contact persons, Blerina Gjoka.
Abalonyx AS is a hi-tech SME founded in 2005 by Rune Wendelbo. The company is located in Oslo, Norway, and today is positioned in the Graphene-Based Materials (GBM) market as the only company in Europe that is able to produce large quantities of graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide and other high-quality derivatives of these materials. Graphene Oxide (GO) and reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) consist of graphene sheets with oxygenated groups in the carbon structure. Their main advantage over graphene is that GO/rGO can be further functionalised through the oxygenated groups that can provide semiconductor band gap features.
Abalonyx produces GO in Kg-quantities using a proprietary, safe, inexpensive and scalable process for its production. GO and rGO are suitable for applications in fields including environment, energy, biomedicine, corrosion protection and additive to polymers. GO also serves as a convenient intermediate for large scale production of graphene-like materials such as reduced graphene oxide (rGO), used in the application to enhance thermal and electrical conductivity. Commercial grades of graphene oxide and derivatives are shown in figure 1.
The group we are participating in, Klimatledande Processteknik (Climate-leading Process Technology Cluster), which is the most relevant for us and we will present the Abalonyx in the next meeting on the 4th of February.
Abalonyx has major customers in Gothenburg, and because of our relationship with both Chalmers and the Graphene flagship we aim to expand and build our network in this context.
One of us in Abalonyx has an office at Johanneberg Science Park and after having had contact with Clusters members and group leaders, we have come to know some companies that we could collaborate with in the future.
